History

Flatmates.com.au was launched in 1997 as Australia's first share house directory, based in Melbourne but operating Australia-wide. Around the same time, another internet pioneer, Sonya Green, launched her Perth share search agency with the website flatmate.com.au.

Both share accommodation sites were purchased by Student Services Australia and relaunched in February 2008. The relaunch included another first - the first Australian share house site to included embedded YouTube video.We also included Google Maps and a search-by-maps feature. Importantly, the site will always remain 100% free.

In July 2009 we will launch a sister share accommodation site, studentflatmates.com.au, providing some additional features relevant to students (like search-by-campus). All listings will appear on both sites and it too will be 100% free.
