Most importantly: I also have a dog: a 4 year old working breed rescue mutt. He's awesome and loves cuddles (and runs - hint hint), so it is essential that you love dogs. We travel a lot and are super easy to live with. We go overseas for 6 weeks every 6 weeks so you will have the place to yourself a fair bit.
