We are renting a 2 bedroom unit (separate blocks, not on top of one another like apartments) and are looking to rent out our 2nd bedroom, it is less than 10minutes walk to Chatham station, Surrey Hills station and Tram 70 (Riversdale Road). There is also a 612 bus that runs between Box Hill and Chadstone. Chatham and Surrey Hills station are both zone 1 and 2, so you can get the cheapest rate whether you go into the city or out of the city. Surroundings are pretty nice, lots of parks, walks and close to Maling rd (Canterbury) which is filled with cafes if you are obsessed with coffee like me :D We get along with our neighbours as well, so there are no issues there.
