Flatmate Experience – Sharing for Awareness

I want to share a lesson from a recent flatmate experience involving someone named Charitha Gamage.

Throughout our time living together, I supported him in many ways. I often shared food, helped him with driving practice for free, and even gave him furniture, a mattress, bed, cabinet, and desk so he could settle in and later move out more easily. I invited him to BBQs and swimming, and I spent time talking with him when he felt homesick.

Despite all of this, when concerns came up, he chose not to communicate or resolve them. After moving out, he blocked all contact, leaving misunderstandings unresolved. I later realised that some things he told me weren’t true for example, saying he had no money while buying alcohol. It felt like he had no sense of responsibility or appreciation for the kindness shown to him.

This experience reminded me that trust, accountability, and open communication are essential in shared living. Support and kindness should be mutual, not one‑sided.

I’m sharing this so others can be mindful and make careful decisions when choosing flatmates, so they can protect their own peace of mind.
