Darwin is often that forgotten about capital city. It seems any further away than Perth and its tropical climate makes it feel like a different place. The truth is Darwin is another place, a magical city, perfect for anyone who wants to get away, try out a new scene, learn a lot about Australia’s history or get nice and friendly with some crocs. Plus if you’re in the military or community journalism, there are a stacks of jobs available in the top end.

Flatmates.com.au has run new data on suburb rental prices. Over the coming weeks we’ll be bringing you articles on the cheapest and most expensive suburbs to rent a private room in a share house in each capital city. If you live for mimosas in tropical heat, love a slider or two with the girls at Nightcliff markets or you love working on that tan by the pool, then Darwin’s 5 most expensive share suburbs within 10km of the CBD are for you.

NB: While Darwin is not the cheapest capital city in which to find a share house at the lower end of the market, compared to other states there’s little difference between Darwin’s most affordable inner-city locations and the most expensive.

DARWIN CITY

Distance: 0km from the CBD
Rent average: $225/week private room

Modern apartments with pools, large bedrooms and water views – the value in Darwin’s CBD is second to none. In many cases for less than $200 you can have most (if not all) of those luxuries, though some of the premium share house options push the average a little higher, marking it as the city’s most expensive suburb to find a room. For your money you’ll be within walking distance of everything the city has to offer, and yet still enjoying Darwin’s trademark regional town feel.

NIGHTCLIFF

Distance: 10km from the CBD
Rent average: $220/week private room

For that oceanside lifestyle and upmarket aesthetic, Nightcliff is a strong bet. Located only five minutes from the airport, the little suburb is a beacon for families, with plenty of parks as well as a local primary and high school and an early learning centre. On Sundays the Nightcliff Markets are the place to be, offering great food and family entertainment.

LARRAKEYAH

Distance: 3.4km from the CBD
Rent average: $200/week private room

If you want to be in the CBD without being right in the midst of the hustle and bustle, choose Larrakayeh, where you’ll have no trouble finding a great room close to the water and the marina for less than $200 per week. While the CBD is on your eastern doorstep, it’s a suburb that feels more like a holiday getaway, with the waterfront, Mindil Markets and plenty of open space all around. Of course, if you do need to head into town it’s only a short walk or a couple of minutes in an uber.

STUART PARK

Distance: 2.2km from the CBD
Rent average: $200/week private room

Positioned just north of Darwin City and bordered by the Stuart Highway, Stuart Park is popular with city workers and professionals who want to live near the centre of town but with a bit more room to grow their veggie patch. Stuart Park is well-serviced for buses, the highway provides easy access both in and out of town, while the Botanic Gardens are less than 100m from the edge of the suburb.

RAPID CREEK ($200)

Distance: 10.6km from the CBD
Rent average: $200/week private room

For a room that’s just that little bit cheaper than Nightcliff but loses little of the appeal (given it’s right next door), Rapid Creek is worth a look. There’s plenty of cheap and cheerful accommodation to be found in this handy little pocket only 9km from the CBD, and it’s one of the few places in Australia where you’re a good chance of a home with a pool for less than $200 per week. The beach and foreshore park are always popular, while the suburb also taps into the demand for local markets with its own Sunday market just off the main road.
