The cats get put into the garage at night (for uninterrupted sleep), but roam during the day inside and out. They love a sleep on the couch, or the bed, so a cat lover preferred. (Although, I'd not mind someone with a dog, past experience shows that the cats are incredibly traumatised by a dog in their space so I have to say no sadly, to dog owners.)
