Hey, I’m Steve 👋

Hi, I’m Steve — a Kiwi from New Zealand who’s been living in Melbourne for about 20 years. Somehow the accent has survived all this time 😂

I work full-time as a traffic controller, mainly on freeway and major road projects. I generally work Sunday–Thursday nights, although my hours can change depending on the season and the work available. Because I work nights, home is usually my place to switch off, relax and catch up on sleep, so I’m pretty quiet around the house.

That said, I’m definitely not antisocial. I’m quite outgoing when I get the chance and always happy to have a chat, share a meal or hang out — but I’m also completely comfortable doing my own thing. I’m pretty easygoing when it comes to the whole “flatmate vibe” and happy to fit in with the household.

A bit about me

I’m a big fan of the beach and anything involving the water — snorkelling, surfing, spearfishing and paddleboarding are all things I enjoy.

I’m also into DIY and making things when I actually get some spare time. I like making jewellery and I’m interested in finding, cutting and polishing gemstones and fossils. Basically, if I find an interesting rock, there’s a good chance I’ll want to take it home 😂

I’m happy to share meals and occasionally cook together, but I’m equally happy grabbing something myself and getting out of everyone’s way. I’m pretty respectful of people's space and expect the same in return.

Practical stuff

I have a wagon and a take-home freeway traffic-control POD truck, so street parking is important. It doesn’t necessarily have to be directly outside the house if there’s somewhere nearby, but I need somewhere I can legally park the truck because I can occasionally be called out for emergency work.

I don’t smoke. I do vape, but I’m respectful about it and can vape outside.

I’m not much of a drinker, although ironically I enjoy making my own wine and spirits. I’m perfectly happy having the occasional wine with dinner, but I’m definitely not looking for a party house.

Overall, I’m looking for a comfortable, relaxed place with good people, where everyone can have their own space but still have a chat, share a meal or do something together when the mood strikes.
