Darwin, our long lost northern neighbour. Our most northern capital is the perfect place for anyone who wants to get away, try out a new scene, learn a lot about Australia’s history or to just live their best tropical life. Plus if you’re in the military or community journalism, there are a stacks of jobs available in the top end. Just keep an eye out for crocs!
Flatmates.com.au has run new data on suburb rental prices. Over the coming weeks we’ll be bringing you articles on the cheapest and most expensive suburbs to rent a private room in a share house in each capital city. If you love a Darwin Stubby to help you cool off, you shout crikey when you see a croc or you just love being the frugal king in the north, then Darwin’s 5 cheapest share suburbs within 10km of the CBD are for you.
Distance: 5km from the CBD
Rent average: $200/week private room
Fannie Bay packs plenty into only 4.6 square kilometres. Less than 5km from the CBD, it’s where you’ll find your best Surf n Turf with the Darwin Turf Club on one side and the Darwin Sailing and Ski Club on the other. The popular Vestey’s Beach and Park area are forever popular with groups and families. You’re also in luck as the local IGA is a ripper as are the Parap Village Markets, only a short stroll away.
Distance: 4km from the CBD
Rent average: $190/week private room
Now we’re below the $200 mark for an average room, and for that kind of money Parap represents brilliant value. Less than 4km from the CBD, the suburb has good public transport and a great selection of local pubs and restaurants, including the Parap Tavern and Darwin Railway Club, while an array of other options are available on and around Parap Road. On a Saturday it’s hard to go past the Parap Village Markets, with dozens of stalls selling everything from fresh food and produce to plants and arts and crafts.
Distance: 6.3km from the CBD
Rent average: $180/week private room
Bordering Darwin International Airport and the RAAF base, Ludmilla’s sparse population means share house rooms can be rare, but when they’re listed there are bargains to be had. It’s not uncommon to see rooms for rent on Flatmates.com.au for little more than $100. Parap loses none of the convenience of its neighbours, with direct access onto the Stuart Highway, a McDonald’s, a supermarket and other retail.
Distance: 8km from the CBD
Rent average: $180/week private room
Affordable and handy to everything, Coconut Grove ticks plenty of boxes for share house seekers – the problem is getting in! Locals report the suburb tends to be exceptionally tightly held as people just don’t want to leave! Flatmates.com.au data supports this claim, with the fewest listings on average of any of the suburbs in our cheapest or most expensive Darwin share suburbs. Should you be lucky enough to secure a room, you’ll enjoy much the same amenity as neighbouring upmarket Nightcliff, with supermarkets, weekend markets and the waterfront all right there, while the convenience of the Jape Homemaker Village is just across the road.
Distance: 20km from the CBD
Rent average: $200/week private room
Ok so Durack is a little further out than our 10km cut off, but we had to add her in this list as she is home to Charles Darwin University’s Palmerston campus, making the suburb super popular with students, young people and flatmates! From Durack you can walk to uni classes, the Gateway Shopping Centre and (to its best store) Big W woo! The Palmerston Shopping Centre and Oasis Shopping Village are equally close by as well. There are also two golf courses for hose who want a hit and the full suite of takeaway food options, while the Stuart Highway will have you in the CBD in 10 minutes. The average price of a share house room still hits $200, but for the budget conscious there are regularly options in the low $100s.
