If you want to live close to the city on the cheap, a number of Hobart’s inner-city suburbs present some of the best options in Australia for share houses. Even the cheapest suburbs are no more than 10km from the CBD and offer the kind of convenience you’d be paying hundreds of dollars more for in other capital cities.

Known for its larger period homes, New Town might be only 4km from Hobart’s CBD but it certainly doesn’t feel like it. In the centre of the ‘Town you’ll find New Town Plaza, anchored by a Kmart and Coles, while the InterCity Cycleway runs through the middle of the suburb, perfect for those weekend rides to Claremont, or down to the waterfront to catch the Salamanca Markets or weekend nightlife.
Distance: 6.9km from the CBD
Rent average: $175/week private room
Just north-west of New Town lies the little pocket of West Moonah, where residents can enjoy views of both Mount Wellington and the water (aka the dream). While it doesn’t have its own shopping precinct, Moonah’s Main Road is only moments away, putting Woolworths, fast food, The Good Guys and tons of entertainment options within easy reach. With Glenorchy directly to the north and New Town down the road, you’ll never be caught short of things to do.
Distance: 7.3km from the CBD
Rent average: $175/week private room
Few places have boomed like Glenorchy over the past five years and you won’t find better amenities on this kind of budget either. The Hobart Showgrounds, Derwent Entertainment Centre, Elwick Racecourse and numerous sports and leisure centres are all right there, while the famous MONA gallery is only a few minutes down the highway. Northgate Shopping Centre, Glenorchy Central and Glenorchy Plaza also deliver the goods, with Coles, Woolworths, Big W, Target all within a block of each other. Gentrification has hit ‘Norchy and hit it hard.

Jump across the Derwent River into Hobart’s eastern suburbs and you’ll soon wind up in the comfortable beachside suburb of Howrah. Residents love it for its relative peace and quiet in comparison to the hum of Hobart. Howrah has two great beaches (Little Howrah and Howrah Beach), greasy and delicious fish and chips and some beautiful cycleways. Many properties are lucky enough to have city views across the water. Iconic Bellerive is just next door, and for those requiring convenience to Hobart Airport, it’s a great option.
Distance: 10.9km from the CBD
Rent average: $180/week private room
Extending from the west of Howrah all the way down the back of Tranmere along the River Derwent, Rokeby has been forging a new reputation in recent years. Traditionally a cheaper suburb, its affordability has seen an influx of new homes and homeowners that are rapidly changing the face of the suburb and increasing the options for renters and share house seekers. What it does lack is a major shopping centre, though it does have a small IGA, but with Howrah and Bellerive close by, it’s not a deal breaker for most.
No longer the laughing stock of Australia, our southernmost capital city was declared as the country’s most unaffordable capital city due to its expensive average rent in comparison with the average income of Hobart. Many of this can be blamed on the city’s tourism boom that has happened over the past few years,
