About the property

Hi there,

Edit: Nov 27 - The room is free from Wed December 03!

Note: this a bit of a ramble. Please read it all, including down below the middle bit and note that we'll gravitate to people who chose to share a bit about themselves.

So, I rented this place in July 2024 after my awesome previous place got sold. I was a little meh about the whole deal but now I really like it here. I love walking or riding home to the lit up veranda among the trees. I was sus on the noise factor so after the inspection I snuck back twice, at night and then on a weekday morning to check out the traffic/trains etc... they were fine! Yeah it's inner city and I grew up semi-rural but I love it here. Plus the (potential) neighbours gave me a good run down on the area and the fact that it wasn't the crime hotspot that I kinda imagined (touch wood lol).

The house is such a random place. The ceilings are super high, the bedrooms are maybe 4m x 4m (x 4m ... they're basically cubes lol) with two big windows or doors. The verandas are big and awesome. The main lounge isn't much bigger than the bedrooms but the back veranda is like a big lounge too. The kitchen is the biggest room in the house with an awesome gas cooktop and fire place. Which is one of two (!) There are several nice views over the area and this place has the best breezes I've ever had. But then there is just one, older bathroom. It's fine and there is another toilet downstairs we can get going (the owner and agent have been talking about it) but it's been a while since I used a shower/bath combo lol. It does mean that we're making things clean and hygienic after each visit to that room - something to consider I reckon. Sharing is a form of family but some family stuff we ain't sharing! There is plenty of parking out the back and there are trees all around. Everyone is surprised by how nice it is here despite being this close to the city.

Location: After 12+ months I'm still amazed myself about how close and convenient it is. The trains and buses at Park Rd/Boggo Rd are like 1-2 minutes walk. The Gabba live venues and the Mater, Childrens and PA hospitals are between 600 and 900m away. The Gabba stadium is 20 minutes, walking slowly. Awesome coffee is maybe 3 min walk.

Cycling: I cycle heaps of places - the main city-southside bike track is at the end of the street. The UQ green bridge and QUT bridge are both about 5 minutes. I've ridden to Queen street in 11 minutes and the UQ tennis courts in 10!

Driving: I go all over town and this place is great for anything other than heading away from the city on weekday afternoons. You'd be mad to drive into the CBD for 9-5 work but at least you'd be skipping the traffic further away from here.

Serious comment: I'm a seriously chill, open person. I'm a straight bloke but all are welcome here so long as you're happy within yourself and reasonably on top of your own stuff. My work in disability and mental health means that I'm more humble than some but also more sensitive than some to mental health stuff. I can't be working with those challenges and then coming home to them so please be aware that I'll need some straight talk from people as we work out good fits. And OK, if you're a low key cooker of some sort who thinks women/Jews/Moslems/lizard people are behind it all maybe look elsewhere :-).

Edit, Aug 11: given where things have gotten to in Gaza, I'm going to just add that being upset with Israel is fair IMO but blaming everyone of any particular religious persuasion wouldn't be welcome here. None of us get to chose to be born, let alone in what form or what location. And we're all brain-washed to some extent - it's normal and necessary. Hey its the reason I consistently remember pants every day. But if your situation has caused you to develop a hatred for others, I'm sorry and can't judge, but please look elsewhere.

About the flatmates

Hi there! I'm John, writing this initial blurb for myself and what's turned out to be a cavalcade of people. More on that below. I'm 50, work in the disability sector and have way too many projects, interests and hobbies. Music, cycling, hiking, tech, sailing... and more lol. I've been in Brisbane most of my life, mostly sharing with partners or friends. I love share housing. I had my own place in Auchenflower for three years from 2020 and loved it, but after about 18 months realised that I missed sharing. I renewed for the 3rd year just because housing was going cray cray but in 2023 made the move to a bigger, better place in Annerley to share. That place was going to be long term but the owner had a major change of life and had to sell.

So, the flatmates. I guess it's the housing crisis but things have been less settled than any of us would prefer. But it turns out that I've loved having random peeps staying, plus I now have friends to visit in 7 different countries! To give you an idea...
* Romany from Wales - an awesome 28ish nurse - at the previous place from Jan - May last year. I ended up going to Uluru with her and my GF just before she went home.
* Priscila from Brazil (30ish?) - moved in just after I got this place. She stayed until she went home in December.
* Adam (42ish?) moved in soon after Priscila and really settled in but in September had to move closer to family out of town to help them.
* Federica and Hugo - 32ish, from Italy and Chile - awesome people who came in January for two months, ended up staying until September lol. Off doing farm work and then touring. They'll stay for a few nights in December in their camper before heading over to NZ.
* Currently staying are a French couple, two guys, whose situation has changed and are leaving over this coming weekend. Also an English couple who will be off again either late Dec or early Jan.

I've got no preference for gender, age etc. See above though - re - chillness etc. Whoever moves in now will then get to help chose the people who join us when Ash and Mark depart. I do prefer a mix of genders but anything can work.

Please Note: It's a house with a yard so please understand that some regular working bees are needed to keep it looking neat. I've got all of the stuff. I've took this lease for 2 years and it's just ticked over into the second year.

I expect to stay for years to come but be aware that it gets renewed in July 2026. FWIW I recently built a shelter out the back to cover the wooden trailer yacht project I'm finishing with a mate. And I kinda overbuilt it to ensure it could cope with summer storms plus had room for the next, bigger project, so I want/expect to stay here for a while :-)

Please note that for a couple it would be an additional $100/week.
