I recently submitted my thesis for a Master of Philosophy at UQ (I study Pure Mathematics) and, as such, I am currently waiting to have it assessed and then defend it. Given this, I am currently in a state of limbo and am deciding whether I should continue onto a PhD or find something else to do.
In terms of the place I am looking for, these are the key things: somewhere with a private room and private bathroom, with manageable public transport to UQ (at most, around 45 minutes of travel one-way), has a quiet and comfortable environment, and is fine with me having my girlfriend over (see point 3 below).
For some more details:
1. I’m looking for somewhere around $300 per week, but I can go up to $370 per week.
2. My typical day will be divided, between being at the university, going to the library, staying in my room (either relaxing or studying), or doing something with my girlfriend.
3. During the week, my girlfriend will typically come over and spend 2-3 nights a week with me. Both of us keep to ourselves and spend most of our time in my room, eating a meal I cooked for us, or going out.
4. I will generally spend 1-2 nights over at her family’s place.
5. Depending on the location, my mother may come visit me on a weekend day sometimes.
6. I am a pretty quiet individual and I prefer living in a serene environment to suit that; I don’t drink, smoke, party, or engage in any activities of that nature. As such I would prefer to live somewhere that is “as boring as possible”.
7. In terms of employment, I am a maths tutor (both privately and for the School of Mathematics and Physics at UQ). As such, I may occasionally do online tutoring (in such a case, I will be respectful to not disturb others; I usually do this from my own room with the door closed).
8. In terms of my previous experience sharing a place: from 2022 to 2025, I shared a two bedroom apartment in West End.
9. I will typically cook once or twice a week (meal prepping for the week), and then clean up after myself. To add to this, I have my own cookware, dishes, and utensils.
10. I’m actually pretty flexible with the move in date, so I'm not in a big rush.
Thank you very much for your time and all the best!
